CENTER OF ATTENTION: WEEK 3
Jonathan Luigs (Jr., 6-4, 307), Arkansas Arkansas
do-everything back Darren McFadden knows what it's like to be
the focal point of the opposition's game-plan every week - but so does
the Razorbacks' junior Watch Lister Jonathan Luigs. "Just like
Darren, (our success) has put an X on my chest for defensive linemen
and teams to try and do well against me, " Luigs told the Northwest
Arkansas Times. " It's worked in a positive way for me to make me work
harder and step up and be one of the leaders on this team and try to
get us back to where we were last year [SEC West champions ] and maybe
to the national championship. " In the season-opening 46-26 victory
over Troy University on Sept. 1, McFadden and Felix Jones
netted 529 total yards. Even with Troy stacking the box, Luigs and
senior right guard Robert Felton and senior right tackle Nate
Garner kept McFadden and Jones running right at and through the
Trojans. "I tell you Jonathan Luigs, Robert Felton,
Nate Garner, that was a solid, solid effort," Arkansas head coach
Houston Nutt says. "I think the most impressive thing was their
pass protection. Their pass protection was very, very good. "
SOPHOMORE SENSATIONS
Four sophomores made it onto this year's Watch List: Kenny Alfred
(Washington State), Jim Cordle (Ohio State), Rafael Eubanks (Iowa),
Juan Garcia (Washington) and Josh McNeil (Tennessee). No sophomore has
ever won the Rimington.
THEY SAID IT
"I've just got to keep everyone in line, make sure nobody slacks
off for a play. I need to keep on everybody, keep them focused and
doing everything right. You've just got to keep it going in practice,
because that's where you refine your skills."
-- Penn State center A.Q. Shipley, a 6-1, 297- pound junior.
Shipley and the Nittany Lions took care of business last weekend vs.
Notre Dame, 31-10.
DID YOU KNOW?
Six-foot-two Rice center Austin Wilkinson is one of the
leanest Watch Listers out there, weighing in at a meager 270 pounds
(tying Air Force's Blaine Guenther). Who says, though, you have
to be big to be durable on the O-line? The junior from The Woodlands,
Tex. has played 26-straight games entering this weekend - every game
thus far of his collegiate career..
