CENTER OF ATTENTION: WEEK 4
Antoine Caldwell (Jr., 6-3, 292), Alabama Last week, the
Rimington Report shined a light on Arkansas' junior Jonathan Luigs,
but in the wake of Alabama's thrilling 41-37 win over the Razorbacks
Saturday night, it's time to show a little love to the other center in
that matchup - Bama's Antoine Caldwell. The junior has been key
in the early season success of the 3-0 Crimson Tide, having started
all 26 games of his collegiate career. He even earned "co-offensive
player of the week" honors by the Tide coaching staff following
Alabama's 52-6 season opening win over Western Carolina. "We want to
be relentless," said Caldwell of the team's new attitude under first
year Head Coach Nick Saban. "You can't take plays off. I don't
know that we took plays off in the past, but I know we can't now." The
Razorbacks learned that the hard way last week.
PRIORITIES
Bowling Green Watch Lister Kory Lichtensteiger's life has
changed in ways he could have never imagined when he graduated from
Crestview High School in Northwest, Ohio five years ago. Not only is
he an NFL prospect, but he is a husband and father. The BG captain
married his high school sweetheart Mandi early in his college career.
With the birth or their son Ayden in June 2004, the young couple has
evolved into a young family - something that's caused Kory to toughen
up. "I know Ayden, my son, requires a lot of energy, probably more
energy than it takes to hold off a big defensive lineman,"
Lichtensteiger says with a laugh.
THEY SAID IT
"The biggest challenge (at center) is getting into a comfortable
stance," he said. "The first couple of times I snapped the ball, my
legs were too close together and I bruised my forearm by hitting my
knee braces."
-- Navy center Antron Harper, a 5- 11, 272-pound senior. The
Midshipmen are off to a disappointing 1-2 start after falling 31-30 in
overtime to Ball State on Saturday.
DID YOU KNOW?
Illinois junior center Ryan McDonald (6-5, 293) is one of 35
undergraduate students across the country participating in the
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) this summer. UROP
invites undergraduate students to be involved as junior colleagues of
MIT faculty. McDonald is a member of the National Honor Society with a
3.99 GPA.
