Family Gears Up For A Life-Saving Ride

The first break from summer's oppressive combination of heat and humidity brings a flurry of activity on golf courses throughout south Louisiana.

Notable today are the approaching deadlines for major tournaments and fundraisers in the area.

First up is Monday's entry deadline for the annual Slice of Life Tournament coming up Sept. 22 at Copper Mill in Zachary.

The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank benefits from this annual get-together. To register, or for details, call Jennifer Crowley, 225-359-9940.

Next is the Sept. 23 deadline for the Louisiana Golf Association's 4-Ball Championship set for the Bayou DeSiard Country Club in Monroe Oct. 4-5.

To enter, players must be members of an LGA member club or an LGA associate member and must be at least 18 years old. The fee is $300 per team. The field is limited to 80 teams. Call the LGA, 337-265-3938, for more information.

And, the White Castle Recreation Association is trying to make improvements to its facilities with a benefit tournament set Oct. 3 at the Westside Club in Brusly. There's a $50-per-player entry fee, and the entry deadline is Sept. 30.

There are no entry deadlines for several upcoming tournaments, like the Sept. 27 LSU Women's Basketball Classic, the Sept. 29 Small Business Tournament, the Oct. 3 Myriam's House Tournament nor the Oct. 24 Hollingsworth Richards/Bert Jones Classic.

Myriam's House, the homeless women's shelter near LSU, is counting on its Oct. 3 golf tournament to raise the bulk of its operating funds for next year. The tournament is set for The Lakes at Pelican Point in Gonzales. For details, call 225-334-0662.

As usual, the HRBJ Classic will benefit Cystic Fibrosis. The four-player scramble is set for Pelican Point in Gonzales. Call CF, 225-769-9994, for details.

PUNT, PASS, KICK: The Pointe Coupee Rec Department will hold its annual NFL/Pepsi Punt, Pass and Kick Contest Sept. 21 at False River Park in New Roads.

There's no entry fee, and the competition is open to boys and girls ages 8-15. Registration is set for 1:30 p.m. and the contest will begin at 2 p.m.

For details, call Greg Johnson at the PCRD, 225-638-3870.
