"CF may be a part of you, but do not let it define you."
The experience of living with cystic fibrosis is markedly different today than it was decades ago. Thanks to the discovery of the CF gene, the availability of effective drug therapies and advances in technology, the 30,000 Americans who deal with the disease day in and day out are living longer and fuller lives. In a word, they are thriving.

Steve Bell

Steve Bell, 26, is an avid participant in Team Boomer. Steve will run his second ING New York City marathon for Team Boomer in November.

Steve’s Story

“I was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when I was three months old. Throughout my life, there were always obstacles or doubts or challenges. Some more difficult than others. But it?s not about the challenges, it?s about your attitude, how you overcome, and what you do with what you?ve learned from that experience. Whether it is the diagnosis of CF-related diabetes, overcoming the daily battle, or walking on to the Ithaca College soccer team, I?m determined, I fight, and I prevail.”

On Staying Healthy

“I am compliant with my treatments and exercise five to six days a week. I enjoy playing soccer and running.” A Fun Fact About Steve is that he ran the 2009 ING New York City Marathon for Team Boomer and finished in 3:57, achieving his goal of finishing in under four hours. “Another example of how if you put your mind to something, there’s nothing that can stop you.”

Because of BEF

“Because of BEF I have hope. I have hope that one day we might find a cure for cystic fibrosis. Because of BEF I have a partner. A group of dedicated individuals to help in the fight against cystic fibrosis. Because of BEF I have support. Support of those who want to make a difference. Because of BEF I am inspired. I am inspired to make a difference in the lives of others with cystic fibrosis. Because of BEF I am motivated. I am motivated to fight everyday to beat cystic fibrosis. To me, the Boomer Esiason Foundation is different people from different backgrounds that come together for one common goal. To educate, generate awareness and improve the quality of life for people with cystic fibrosis. I am honored and privileged to say that I am part of this great group of people.”
