The Fordham University men’s basketball fans got their first look at the 2011-12 Rams at the Maroon and White Scrimmage tonight in the Rose Hill Gym. The game was highlighted by a pair of guest coaches, Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton, hosts of the WFAN show, Boomer and Carton in the Morning.
The night started with Carton’s Maroon team taking the court to the sound of Eminem’s Lose Yourself just before Boomer’s White squad came running out to Kashmir by Led Zeppelin. Both songs were personally selected by the guest coaches.
The White team jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead over the first 2:30, led by six points from Chris Gaston before the Maroon team cut the deficit back to four, 16-12, on a Marvin Dominique layup midway through the first.
But the White team responded with eight straight points to take a 24-12 lead with 4:57 left and built the advantage to as many as 16 before settling on a 12-point halftime lead, 36-24.
The White squad increased the lead to 17, 45-28, as they opened the second period with a 9-4 spurt, but the Maroon team whittled the lead down to eight, 50-42, following a Bryan Smith three-pointer with 5:33 remaining but that was as close as the White team would get.
Gaston led all scorers with 22 points and he added 13 rebounds for the White team, while Frazier added 15 points and two steals and Ryan Canty and Devon McMillan each added ten points, with Canty adding eight rebounds and McMillan five assists.
For the Maroon squad, Dominique finished with 15 points, five rebounds and three steals while Kervin Bristol added eleven points and nine rebounds.
The game featured numerous giveaways and raffles. At the media time out in each half, raffle prizes were given away which included an Adam Graves signed New York Rangers’ jersey and New York Rangers tickets as well as a New York Islander tickets and a signed New York Giants jersey.
Two Fordham students also won flat screen televisions and two others a Nook through a special raffle for the students.
All proceeds from the game went to the Boomer Esiason Foundation. The Boomer Esiason Foundation is a dynamic partnership of leaders in the medical and business communities, joining with a committed core of volunteers to heighten awareness, education and the quality of life for those affected by cystic fibrosis, while providing financial support to research aimed at finding a cure.
At halftime, Kevin Geiger, President of SBS Promo who underwrote the night, presented Esiason with a check for $5,000 for the Boomer Esiason Foundation. Boomer and Carton also engaged in a free throw shooting contest during the intermission with the loser donating $500 to the winner’s favorite charity. Boomer will be the one writing the check as Carton defeated him in three overtimes.
The Rams will return to action on Monday night, November 7th, as they host Northwood University in an exhibition game in the Rose Hill Gym at 7:00 p.m. Admission to the game is free.
